Our fourth and final training and networking opportunity of our 2012-2013 year will be Wednesday, August 14, 2013, at The Radisson Hotel Roseville. Our scheduled speakers are Dr. Everett Doolittle, Associate Professor and presently Interim Dean at Metropolitan State University, School of Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice, and members of the Schechter Dokken Kanter Forensic Accounting and Valuation Services Team.

Dr. Everett Doolittle’s presentation will be “The Art of Interviewing.”  This presentation, drawn from a class on “The Gentle Art of Persuasion,” will discuss some on the pitfalls in conducting interviews, and will be beneficial to anyone who has to communicate with others.  Many think interrogation is the key to success, but the main failure is long before the interrogation, it is within the interview.  This discussion focuses on:

  • Planning strategies
  • Opening (Rapport) strategies
  • Listening strategies and robing strategies
  • Interviewing strategies
  • Thinking or evaluation strategies
  • Ending or closure

This class is a combination of lecture with discussion drawing from participant experiences.  This is not a class on interrogation, but on communication, which is most important for law enforcement and non-law enforcement professionals.  (The Rand Corporation in the late 1970’s conducted research on “Why cases failed?” and the problem identified was not the ability to interrogate, but to interview using an indirect approach.)

Dr. Everett Doolittle is an Associate Professor and presently Interim Dean at Metropolitan State University, School of Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice.  He teaches both graduate and under-graduate courses.  His major areas of concentration are: management practices and principles; leadership studies and theories; criminal investigations; violent crime investigations; and criminal justice ethics. Prior to taking a position at the University, Everett was a Senior Special Agent at the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.  While at the BCA, Everett supervised the BCA's Cold Case Homicide Unit. Under Everett's leadership, the Cold Case Unit was featured on CBS's 48 Hours and A&E's Cold Case Files and has solved numerous cold cases.  Over the past thirty years, Everett has worked as a consultant and instructor in both the law enforcement and the civilian communities.  He has provided specialized training and consulted in leadership, management and supervision practices, teambuilding, interviewing, conflict resolution, homicide investigations, law enforcement ethics, and ethical leadership.  Professor Doolittle holds a Doctorate in Public Administration, a Masters in Management and Administration, and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy.

Members of the Schechter Dokken Kanter Forensic Accounting and Valuation Services Team will be walking through the evidence and investigation of a real-life fraud investigation in the nonprofit world.  The discussion will include some of the unique issues that can be encountered within nonprofit fraud investigations, as well as certain behavioral red flags to watch for during fraud investigations.

Schechter Dokken Kanter is a mid-sized Certified Public Accountant and Advisory firm located in Minneapolis.  SDK’s Forensic Accounting and Valuation Services team is led by Joseph Kenyon, with over thirty-five years of experience in accounting, auditing and tax practice, and currently managing shareholder of Schechter Dokken Kanter.  He provides forensic accounting and valuation service to legal counsel and their clients, including developing economic damage studies, forensic accounting, fraud and financial investigations, business valuations, expert testimony, and other needs.  Ginger Knutsen is a senior manager with over fourteen years of experience in audit, tax, accounting and consulting; specializing in providing forensic accounting and valuation services to clients and their legal counsel.  Jennifer Schiefert is a manager in with over seven years of experience providing similar forensic accounting and business valuation services.

Attendance at the general session may be used to fulfill three hours of fraud related, Non-NASBA CPE.  MN POST Credits Pending.  The Board of Directors will hold the quarterly business meeting Immediately following the conclusion of the training session at 11:00.
